Frequenty Asked Questions

Do I have to show my Belly?

No you do not but you can if you like. Belly Dance is a name given to the Middle Eastern Dance of Raqs Sharqi by the West in the early 1900’s. It is really not all about the belly but the whole body and we celebrate all shapes and sizes.

Am I too old?

You are never too old to learn to dance. We have students from 18 to 88 years of age in our classes. We see the benefits that Belly Dance brings to all age groups and fitness levels.

What if I am uncoordinated?

Perfect! Belly Dance will help you improve your balance and coordination. As you stick with it and progress you will see the benefits this style of dance has on your body.

Can I dance if I have a bad back or other injury?

We always advise speaking with your GP before commencing classes. Once you have the ok you are good to go! In the beginner levels you will be guided through posture and movement breakdowns. The best thing about Belly Dance is that it is “user friendly”, meaning it is one of the only forms of dance that can be done by any age group and fitness level. You fit the dance to suit your body. We always ask you to exercise self care, which means you can choose to modify movements and add or subtract layers of movements to suit your body all under the guidance of our experienced and supportive teachers. Some health care professionals even recommend Belly Dance as a great way to keep moving. Some of our students swear it is the reason they are so mobile.

What should I wear?

Wear something comfortable and easy to move around in, like stretchy pants and a tshirt. You can bring a scarf to tie around your hips to accentuate the movements but it is not compulsory.

Do I need special shoes?

No, we recommend bare feet if you are able or if you prefer to wear shoes we recommend something with a soft sole.

Do I have to perform or wear a costume?

The journey of Belly Dance is yours to create; we offer opportunities for people who would like to perform at various events from end of term parties to community events up to professional level if you wish to work towards that. We have lots of students who just come and enjoy the dance, health and social aspects and never wish to perform and we have those that strive for performance opportunities. We welcome all of them.

We often find the biggest fear of new students is the fear of looking silly and doing it wrong. That is a normal human response, if you can put that fear aside the benefits of jumping in and giving it a go are boundless. We are all in the same boat and learning together, even our teachers are learning all of the time. At Belly Dance Arabesque we strive to create an environment that is fun, inclusive, supportive and welcoming. A place we can all learn and laugh together.
Belly Dance will change your life for the better.
